Subject: How long to blow air on moist soybeans

I harvested some beans with some wildly varying moistures and some green pods. Probably 50% of the beans are at 12.2%, 40% are at 10.8 and the remaining are around 15% moisture. When I started the fan (24" fan in 21' bin w/about 3200 bushels) the air was warm and a little moist - but the heat and moisture might be due to the temperature at which they were harvested.

In a situation like this I'm thinking running some air is the right thing, but I don't want to dry the bin down to 8% either. Should I just check the moisture at the top (12" or so) and watch it go up as moisture rises through the beans. Then, when the top gets reasonably dry (13%) turn the fan off?

In the past I would put air on the beans on colder nights to get the heat out of them, but not usually in an attempt to dry.

On the other hand, the dryer beans might just absorb the moisture of the wet beans and it will be a wash (or I could have rotten beans on the edge of the bin).

Thanks for the advice,

Pat
