Subject: RE: Better no-till opener for sticky soil?

NW Washington
The John Deere no-till opener has problems in wet sticky soil conditions. First the seed firming wheel balls up with soil. Removing the wheel and replacing with a solid plastic (Fin) or a Keeton seed firmer gets around that problem. Next it is hard to get the seed slot closed up behind the opener and if closed it will tend to open back up when the soil dries.

Generally speaking none of the no-till drill openers work well in wet, sticky conditions. My guess would be that the Cross-slot would work the best, but it is a very expensive opener assembly. The Cross-slot works great, the cost is really prohibitive.
