Doesn't that seem a little deceptive to not state the variety?

I walked into a neighbors seed shed this spring. While talking with him, I happened to glance at three pallets of corn, from three different companies. He noticed me looking and said that he picked the best corn from those three companies. I pulled a tag from each and noticed the variety ID listed under the hybrid number was the same from all three. I pointed this out, and he about dropped.

Instead of planting 150 acres each of three different hybrids, he would have planted 450 acres of the same corn. He was not told by the individual seed dealers that those exact genetics were available from other companies, and he didn't look into it himself.

Variety labeling is required in Iowa for good reason.
