| more of a question really.
What is an Independent Seed Company? There are so few true breeding programs of quality and there is not enough critical mass with a regional/local seed company to invest in research in genetics and technologies to be truly independent IMO. In my area, 95% of the corn and soy have some sort of technology attached, all technologies are held by the larger entities as they had/have the mass to invest in research.
I think it would shock most farmers how narrow their genetic choices have become the past few years. In my county, our extension has a yearly soy plot. In the early grop III beans in 2007 we had 10 entries, of those 10 8 of the beans were idenical genetics, just sold in a different bag.
Reminder, it is required by law to publish the varietal code on seed tags although some companies are not complyong with the law.
