I have seen a 4320 shear the dowel pins that locate the ring gear to the axle housing. It did exactly what you are describing.
Another possibility may be that the spider gear shaft has failed in the differential.
If you are real lucky, the wheel wedges have worked loose and the axle sheared one of the "keyed" wheel wedges.
