Subject: Re: Triple Vs Conventional.........

I think several factors are at play here. First off, triples protect against two primary pests rootworm and corn borer. We often focus just on the rootworm component and not the corn borer, but in most geographies in most years, insecticide will also control RW. Corn borer protection is still an important component of the benefit. All insect pressure is pretty variable and hard to predict, both year by year, and even within a field. Insect pressure is very spotty within a field. With two unrelated variables at play, the swing of a measure of "triple benefit" is going to be very wide. The basis of a plot testing program is that all hybrids get the same treatment, so we are assuming that all hybrids get the same rootworm pressure level in their strip. We know however that this is very unlikely to be the case. So while a conventional may look great in a plot, when you're picking a whole field and you eliminate, or greatly control, the tough areas with the highest insect pressure, you give the triples a real advantage in whole field performance, which is what matters to most of us.
