Subject: Re: Dekalb Canola Growers

Camrose, Alberta
I did a Roundup Ready side by side plot of 71-45 vs. 72-55 vs. Canterra 1841 this year. We where going to do the weigh wagon swathes today but it rained, I can update on the results.

From what I am told the 72-55 is supposed to have improved standability over the 71-45, but I didn't see it this year. Both Dekalb's where about 18 inches tall and 3 feet horizontal (not flat on the ground). I have never seen canola lean that bad before, it was leaning pretty much straight east, it was kind of neat though since all the plants were leaning evenly. The 1841 was vertical and about five to six feet tall. To compare to other varieties, my InVigor 5020 had a pretty good lean to it as well (which we haven't seen in the past before). I also had some InVigor 8440 and 5440 which both stood better than the 5020.

I have grown 71-45, 1841 and 5020 the past three years. In 2006 all three where within 1.2 bu/ac of eachother. In 2007 the 5020 was 4 bu/ac higher than 1841 and the 1841 was almost 10 bu/ac better than 71-45. 2007 was a very wet spring and it seemed the 71-45 drowned out the easiest out of the three varieties, which I believe is why it yielded the poorest. I do not know the yield results yet for 2008.

I personally use 5020 as a benchmark and select varieties to grow on my farm comparing them to 5020. Canterra 1841 has similar yields to 5020, but is 5 days later in timing of swathing. After three years of trying 71-45 and one year of seeing that the 72-55 offers no improved standability, I do not plan to grow either variety in 2009.

In fact I am not planning to grow any Roundup Ready varieties in the future, since the I have found I get better weed control usind the Liberty system. The proof for me is in the dockage, specifically the amount of weed seeds. My RR canola always has more wild buckwheat seeds since Roundup is fairly ineffective on this weed and wild buckwheat is one of my top three weeds on my farm.
