Subject: FYI on IH power steering systems

Having an automotive background (steering systems even) I had the thought that most powersteering pumps were quite similar (cars and trucks tend to be). I was wrong. The direct drive pump that goes on a DT466 will not provide enough flow for an older sheppard 392 steering gear. Maybe there was a big change in steering gears so they needed less flow but the motor I used for the engine swap was a 1985 while my truck is a 1984 (pretty close, but it could be the magic year). Anyway, the old belt drive pump works fine, though creating mounts for yet another accessory wasn't the most fun. Comparing the pumps it's pretty clear that the belt drive pump is significantly larger. Anyone one to buy a barely used pump and and used pump that probably is just fine.

Thanks,

Pat
