If you're calling 40ton/acre a hurt yield, I can't imagine what you call a good yield.  At 65% moisture we're very happy with mid-twenties, to maybe pushing 30t.  This is on 200-230 bu irrigated corn ground in the cornbelt.  40 ton, yowzers!!!!!, can't imagine that, what is your plant populations and projected grain yield?
