Subject: RE: Density and CFR Settings for an Insight Strip Till module

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
The Strip-till module has a procedure to set the density and CFR for a product for each bin that it might be in.

To keep things simple, let's suppose the Strip-till rig has only one bin and one product. As stated in my earlier post, the system will assign a density and CFR to the product. With these settings you should at least be able to get the system to deliver some product. The first time the system is run the CFR may be off considerably as this a function of the delivery system. Once the CFR is determined for the machine it shouldn't vary tremendously for that bin.

The Strip-till RUN screen has a Strip-till button on it that is not present on other RUN screens such as those you might see with a liquid sprayer. If you push this button you can see the current Density and CFR that is currently being used by the product that you have chosen.

The Density and CFR values have a the numeric keypad icon beside them so you can enter in new values as desired.

There are two wizards for setting the CFR. The first type is for initial setup. It amounts to telling the system to deliver a certain amount of product - say 200#. You "catch" the product delivered with pails or whatever. The procedure continues and the system will deliver what it feels is 200# based on the default CFR and Density. You weigh the amount delivered and enter it into the system. The system then refines the CFR number. This procedure should probably be repeated. Once the CFR number is established this should remain fairly constant for that metering system.

The second part of refining the CFR amounts to real field operation. Some product is applied and the value indicated by the system is compared to the actual weight dispensed. There would be several ways to do this. One might be to start with a level full bin and start applying. Then top off the bin again and somehow weigh what was needed to refill the bin. The values should not be terribly different. Entering in the true weight dispensed will allow the system to further refine the CFR number.

But to your real question of how hard it would be to change the density from day to day or for different suppliers - this could be accomplished quite easily if you know the density of today's batch. You would simply push the Strip-till button and use the keypad to put in the "new" density. That density will stick with that product until you change it again. The CFR (cubic feet/revolution) should remain the same as the same volume (not necessarily weight) should be delivered for each revolution of the metering device independent of the density.

As this happens quite frequently Ag Leader put the Strip-till button right on the RUN screen.

We are in the middle of one of these installs at the moment. We will be ready to run the rig today but I don't know if we will have any product available to perform the static CFR test.
