Look at front idlers around lug bolt holes - they like to crack in this area. If tractor has front weights here, these would have to be removed for a full inspection. Belts will tell you a great deal about the undercarriage. You don't want GoodYear belts; they don't last especially not with extra weight from tanks. You want tractor with Camoplast 5500 series belts to have a chance at standing up to the extra weight of tanks. That said, the JD undercarriage won't take as much weight as a Cat undercarriage, so I wouldn't go much over 400 gallons inboard or outboard. Look for misalignment that would result in damage to the guide blocks - the JDs can be touchy when it comes to getting belts aligned and keeping them that way. You can look at the undercarriage and look for worn rubber, leaking seals, etc. as with any undercarriage, but things specifically to look for on the JD would also include the hardbar brace to front frame and making sure that isn't damaged or cracked. Also pay special attention to vibration-prone items such as exhaust manifold, exhaust system, sheet metal, cab windows and interior. The rough ride of the JD track tractor will take its toll on these areas of the machine and are also things to look for. Are you looking at JD largely because of price or local dealer? The Cat MT700 is a far superior tractor, just playing devil's advocate, but if you don't have track experience, talk to people who have owned both and they'll tell you the same thing.
