Will it run windows based programs Like SMS or other GPS software on Linux? Or do you have to install windows xp on them?

Depends on the application. Some software will run under Linux using a system called Wine. For example the trimble planning software and visualgps both work ok. Otherwise there are versions you can get that come with XP preinstalled, just do a search for eeepc on amazon. Given the small price difference it's probably not worth the stuffing around if you are planning on running windows applications on it.

Hopefully there will be some models coming out with sunlight readable displays in the future, since the technology from this laptop has been spun off into a different company.
