Our old 2188 had the same problem. Changed 2nd gear and a shaft, installed the missing detent ball that the factory forgot to put in, and away we went. Just over $4000 in parts, but not bad to change it yourself.
If you decide to do the work make sure that you drive the combine on 4" of blocks first. That way the transmission will slide out under the combine without having to jack it up.
