Complaint:

Radiator plugs in some conditions causing tractor to run too hot.

Problem:

Tractor may overheat in some extreme crop conditions. Some of the fine ash or grain residue can get through the side screens or any gaps around the front compartment located ahead of the radiator. Plugging may occur if the fan speed is not fast enough to "draw" this residue through the radiator core. The slower fan speed is present during cool ambient temperatures or during the tractor cooling system warm-up period. The plugging situation combined with high ambient air temperature can cause the tractor to overheat. This is primarily seen on MFWD equipped tractors because of the material picked up by the front wheels.

Solution:

An easily installed RE36368 "lockup strap" kit has been developed which allows the temporary "locking up" of the viscous fan drive clutch. This makes the fan a direct drive and increases the fan speed to that of the fan pulley. The resulting speed is faster than the maximum speed a normal fan drive can obtain in hot conditions.

Note: The increased fan speed will cause an increase in fuel consumption and fan noise.

It may be necessary to clean the radiator core at the time of "strap" installation. This will provide maximum air draw through the radiator so the "locked up" fan can keep the build up from recurring. When the extreme conditions are no longer being encountered the two

Lockup straps can be removed to resume normal fan drive operation without any harm to the clutch.

Parts:

The RE36368 "lockup strap" kit is available through service parts and consists of the following:

2 R97789 straps

1 RW24874 instruction

2 19M8162 cap screws

2 14M7294 nuts

We are not promoting lock-up straps as a "cure-all" for cooling system problems. In cases where larger trash is bypassing the seals and plugging the radiator, the sealing problem should be found and fixed. The same is true with any internal cooling system problems or viscous fan failures. We have not had reports of radiator plugging on tractors built with 8 fin/inch radiators (since May 1985). Reference white letter bulletin 85RW-0500-01 for s/n breaks and part numbers of the 8 fin/inch radiators. Lock-up straps should only be required on early tractors with 10 fin/ inch radiators prior to opening up the fin spacing to 8 fin/inch. Please report the symptoms and conditions on any radiator plugging problems on tractors equipped with 8 fin/inch radiators.
