The oil patch and some grain haulers use 2 speed rears. Low is nice when getting 140,000 lbs of truck and trailers moving in a soft feild . As for the bolt sticking out of the housing it is a stud that keeps the crown gear from pushing, flexing, out of and away from the pinion on a heavy torque load. DO NOT TOUCH they are set to thousands of inch clearance. If monkeyed with, either disassemble and reset or risk breaking the crown gear.
