Yes, they can go bad, though I don't know if that's what's blowing your fuse. The one we had go bad, it just left the front axle engaged all the time. No idea which pole to check, we narrowed it down to the switch and when replaced it, everything started working.

I'll bet you have a wire shorted under the cab. The wiring harnesses under there can rub on the various lines and cables on top of the tranny, and eventually wear though the insulation. Our 7120 had that happen, and it ran us crazy until we finally tracked it down.
