| Back in the "good ol days" they were the "in" thing to have for heavy duty use. Supposedly the single piece drop center steel rims of the day were not up to the task, and aluminum wheels were not heard of back then.
My 1971 Chevy 3/4T still has the original split ring wheels on it. One ring got replaced once when a recap tire blew out could not find the ring.
The originals were made by Firestone and have the 1970 mfg date stamped in them. Someday I might replace the old wheels so I can put on tubeless radials. | |
