I used to hear a lot about "plow pan" and compaction, but I prefer a plow to an offset disc. I think the discs compact a lot more, and at a shallower depth which is not good. A plow has natural suction and the disc has to be so heavy to do the job, that it is compacting. I like to just use two implements when doing conventional tillage - a moldboard plow first then an Unverferth Harogator to break up clods and level.
