My first guess would be PH level which you can confirm with a soil test. If its fertility related but not PH the soil test will probably give you the answer anyway. Second guess would have to be nematodes. Third guess compaction and thus poor root development. What else can you tell us? All areas of the field the same soil type? Any discolouration of the plants in the short areas vs the 'normal' areas? Is this something new or does it occur yearly? Have the short areas been getting bigger over time ( as the season progresses? year to year??) Are other crops affected in the same areas year to year or is it just beans?
