Humeston, IA | The energy from DDGS is from the fat content, not the fiber, BTW. Yes, it does run about 27-28% protein, energy = corn.
For your cows, 4 lbs/hd/day is OK. If you have some corn, you could substitute a couple of pounds of DDGS for it to make a 50/50 mix. The cows don't need a great amount of protein at that point, and straight DDGS brings the CP up a bit. Adding corn will lower the CP, as well as lower the total cost. Start out at 4 lbs/hd/day (DDGS/corn mix), increase this to maybe 8-10 lbs/hd/day just before calving or if the weather turns cold.
On the calves (660 lbs?), you could feed this mix, maybe 6-8 lb/hd/day, and free choice hay.
If you can, mix some balancer mineral with this blend so they get the necessary minerals and vitamins.
Feeding to goats should be OK, but I don't have any recs for them.
By the way, these recs come from NRC (National Research Council) numbers, the same any nutritionist would use.
