“These are the times that try men's souls.”
Jeff in my area high mountain pasture is bringing 20-25 dollars a AUM cow/calf from June to Nov. grazing season. Winter grazing is mostly 10-13 dollars for cows. There was some that went for 18 dollars for a long term lease for big chunk of ground a couple of years ago for winter grazing, crested, tall wheat grass, sagebrush.

I don't know how to really get out of counting the cows, I wouldn't want them over grazing it. When they over graze it, they also tear your fences up, make other landowners mad at you. If fifty head is about the right number of head, just figure that as the base price per month 50 hd.@ $20=$1,000 month.

Is he wanting to keep cows there year round and supplement feed? Or just tie it up of next year? If he is a good operator, I wouldn't have a problem, tying it up year to year. When does he wean/sell the calves off? At 20 dollars a AUM are you doing all the work, salting, vet work. For that kind of money I would expect you to provide fencing and salting of cattle.

what's your thoughts?
