| I think it was just something to calm them down, like talking to a baby. Also, I think if the cows know where you are by listening, they don't jerk their heads around to look at you and get spooked.
We say "sss-calf" or "s-calf", I've also heard "say-calf". When we're calling them to the bunk I use "s-calf". When we're just in the lot around them, I just talk to them in a low voice and call them by any old name. And, no we don't name cows.
Well, maybe we do. We've got a top heifer calf in this year's crop we call "Ashley", cause she's got bright red hair and a big butt, just like my niece!
