Rich, around here it is "cah-boss" or "come-boss." I do remember grandpa saying "sah-calf" when calling his calves. It does seem that is fairly universal with only little changes from farm to farm and in diferent regions.
I don't know where it originated, just keep calling them that way cause it worked for dad and grandpa. *grin*
