Subject: Re: 20 inch corn in cent. IL

Madision County, IL
Boog,

Our seven year average has increase approximately 10 bushels per acre over the last five years since switching to 15" corn. Our soils are highly variable from powder white to heavy soils.

When we switched to 15" row corn our additional costs were adding one row unit to our JD 1780 12/23 planter and upgrading our worn out 6 row 30" cornhead. We purchased our 12R15 head from Harv's Farm Supply (no longer selling single chain 15" heads because of patent infringements). The cornhead works well, however, I believe Mr. Calmer makes a much higher quality head.

We have seen other benefits. The are:
Improved weed control with quicker canopy.
We don't have heavy residue concentrated in a 30" row which allows our soils dry out more evenly making it very easy to notill soybeans.
Ability to push populations without a yield hit during a dry season.
Same planter and row spacing for corn and soybeans (100% of split row planter is used for both crops)
Reduced meter speed has improved spacing in the row.
Reduced soil erosion.

Thanks,

JAR
