Once again go to Snopes. It is false. Birds have craws where grain and bugs are ground from the grit the eat. This area is not very moist so the capability to swell is limited. A bird that dies with a full craw will looked bloated at the neck due to the craw being full. Cut it open and you will see the final meal of the bird. By the way, all grains swell when exposed to water the same as rice.
