Where are you located? What you are describing in my part of the world is old seismic activity caveins. Back when they used a 50 lb charge in the 50s and early 60s. That had to make quite a cavern underground. They seem to show up on a wet year. I have one now in a feild, it shows as a 8-10" perfectly round hole on the surface. If you get a flashlight it is about 30' to the bottom and flairs out at about 20' down. I have been dropping rocks down it and avoid dicectly going over it with any equipment. In Alberta the gov't has records of any seimic drilling/blasting from the past.
