Slicker than a Yes album. | Well, we went a little more full bore today. Ears pull off the stalk kind of easy, and since we don't relish the thought of picking up corn off the ground after wind (been there, hated that) we got going. It sounds like a few more guys in the area will be starting this week if the weather holds.
First fields are Dekalb 48-52 and 48-53, planted split planter. 5 gal mix of 28%, Capture and Harness sprayed on with a T-band in the spring. 34,000 pop, planted the 19th of April. We had good rains through the middle of June, then it got dry. Near the home place, 3/4" of rain came around the 4th of July. However, tasseling happened about a week to 10 days early. (The 22nd of July is "average"), then no rain until the 2nd week of August, then only .5". The storms usually blossomed over us, then moved SE, or the cell split to go north or south.
2 weeks ago, 5 inches fell, but it was too late by then. The stalks feel real spongy when you squeeze them, but the stand is good. This is the 4th year of continous corn on this field. As others in the area have found out, you needed some type of insecticide in the spring. Many areas are flat due to bug pressure.
The final numbers? 20-21% moisture, this 80 acre field ran 154bu/ac across the dump cart scale. A little better than what I figured.
