West Texas | Don, I use modified cotton planters to plant anything from sand dropseed (size of sand grains) to fluffy bluestems and forbs. I use either a 3-point toolbar fitted with JD 71 planters or a Kinze with insecticide hoppers. You can make your own metering disks for the kinze from plastic blanks, but I haven't had to do that yet. Correct calibration is pretty simple, too. I use 40" rows, but these planters can be squeezed to 30" or less.
I've used different methods, but using a single coulter in front of the opening v's works great for no-till, and the seed trench can be set precisely as well, in 1/8" increments. I find a single 4" wide closing wheel works best for some conditions, and others need a double spoked closing wheel.
I looked at grass-seed planters, way back when, and nothing met my requirements... i.e: commercial-size. That made me and my dad look at our cotton planters again.
I'm a firm believer in making the most of whats at hand. I paid a bunch for it, after all. :-) | |
