Near-north Ontario, French River | Captive market perhaps? In the past 5 years RR technology has overtaken and now dominates the herbicide programs on many farms. I may be cynical but it seems to me that if a grower is limited to a glyphosate ( for economical reasons.. why grow RR if you are going to spray a more expensive 'conventional herbicide") whether a generic or not, then they can charge what ever they want. We have switched to a predominately RR soybean , but stayed conventional for corn. Why did we switch? It wasnt because RR is any cheaper to produce, but because it has allowed us to eliminate some problem weeds. Now that glyphosate pricing is increasing the return to 'conventional' beans isnt out of the question based on cost alone. But then again I can be cynical . So in a nutshell, IMHO the price is going up because it can. |
