In general there is going to be money to be made raising livestock. It is a margin business. Keep your costs as low as possible, do as good as possible with production and try to market for a profit. Its a lot of work and is not a get rich quick type of deal. Buying open market pigs is a tough deal. Its basically like renting land or buying feeder cattle, there is always someone else who is willing to work for less profit. There are times when buying open market pigs can make a lot of money but most of the time the purchase price of the pigs gets bid right up the break even point. In my opinion, grinding your own feed and utilizing the manure on your crop ground are key to making it a worthwhile deal.
