Driftless SW Wisconsin

No Monte, I don't use sileage or haylage bales. I just wrap the OD of about half of my dry hay bales with a simple Unverferth "Roundabout" to minimize waste. I purchase all of my hay and it is stored outside as shown in a post below somewhere about wrapping hay.

When I put out some bales this morning I was noticing how the condition of my cows has improved since weaning and snapped the picture. I was also remembering a comment below about having cows and heifers together and the heifers being pushed out of the way.

It may not be clear from the picture but they are all standing around and eating hay from a slant bar Applegate bale ring with the entire 360 degrees of the feeder filled with cattle.

While there are no heifers in this cow/bulls group, as long as there are enough hay feeder openings for everyone to eat hay at the same time, I don't see any pushing out of the way with any mix - they are all too busy eating. Having enough openings is important just like bunk space.

Thanks for the kind words.
