The hay on the ground in the foreground is the remains of the previous bale. it is further from the new bale than it looks. usually move this type feed ring when put out a new one. This way they will use up most of  the remains they couldn't reach. but it is mostly stems. Right now want them putting on weight ahead of winter so am not pushing them. also want to make sure all get enough.
