If you dont have feedlot space but have field space just turn them out on open fields. I just think they are more apt to get sick when with a big group in a feed yard. I like to give my younger cows a bit better hay than the ones in the feedlot get. They should require the same amount of feed, you do want to get them in good shape so they bread good.
