Subject: Re: curtains on hog barns

Eastern Iowa
We hired a Hog Slat service technician to come and do some of ours about a month ago. They agreed to do it on time/materials and we figured we could help to keep costs down and get it done timely. Significantly less expensive than the bids from local hog building contractors. We had 10 curtains to take down and replace, five at 44' and 5 at 80' in length. 4 of us and the Hog Slat guy (who was getting $35/hr if I remember right) and it still took over ten hours to do them, and we were working our asses off.

Like anything else, the first one was slower than the rest as you try to figure out the procedure and who should be doing what and when. You don't want the pigs exposed to the weather any longer than necessary this time of year so that's a factor. But we were getting pretty good at it by the time we were done. We did the five 80s in a day from 9:30-5:00. The five short curtains took a total of about 3.5 hours with everyone working together.

So, suppose we were all working at $35/hour, that amounts to about $1925 in labor on those 620 feet of curtain that was removed and replaced, or roughly $3.10 of labor per running foot.
