Faunsdale, AL
You've got some time before next year's harvest, I would look for a machine with a KP already installed and install one in my machine only as a last resort. BTDT X2! Unfortunately not all of them feed really well in every crop condition and like I mentioned, some installations are not for the faint of heart. Seems like I have heard that the frame of the JD pull type choppers has to be cut and lengthened to make room?

Simplest way to do this is find a custom chopper, neighbor, etc who can run your earlage for you.

I think earlage is worth it when you compare to harvesting, drying, storing and grinding corn, IF you're already setup to handle silage.
More drymatter yield per acre than grain,
a very palatable, very digestable feed
simple handling with a loader bucket, no augers, elevator legs, bins, fans, grinder-mixers required.
Can easily harvest as much as a month before the combine can run.

Compared to silage, I don't think earlage has as many advantages. The main one would be making a concentrated feed which takes up less silo space and leaves more residue on the field.
