Subject: waterer advise needed

SW Iowa, Clarinda
Scenario. New field in SW Iowa that I am fall grazing and will try to keep cows on most of winter. On top of a hill there is a rural water hydrant (not mine, but I can buy water), but its about 40 ft from the fence. Electricity(not mine, but can buy from resident) is in a nearby shed about 200 ft away.
My thought was to put a tank next to the fence and fill it with a garden hose each day. In the winter when it gets cold, to only put enough in the tank that they (18 black Angus Cows with fall calves) will drink it down to hopefully empty.
My fear is 1. keeping the hydrant and garden hose from freezing.

If anybody has any better ideas or recommendations I am all ears and would like your advise. Is there a better way? What style of tank do you recommend, plastic or galvenized?

Thanks,
Ben in SW IA.
