I believe I would just mount it on the vertical posts with a saddle clamp so you can adjust it. You may one day have different size cattle in there and really want it to be a different height.

You probably should mount it on the bunk side of the post. I've seen two styles of saddle clamps, one type had U bolts and a single saddle plate and the other had two saddle flanges (could be sized for two different size pipes) held together with 4 half inch bolts and lock nuts.

I'm assuming you are using J bunks? They shouldn't have much trouble reaching all the way to the back of the bunk. You may want to raise the floor of the bunk up above the level of the alley where the cattle stand so their neck will reach a bit farther and it will be easier to keep them from crawling in without having the neck rail so low. Your mixer will determine how far you can go up.
