Thunder Bay, Ontario, Great White North | I won't judge on the wisdom of milking 20 cows or milking cows at all, that is your friend's decision and good for him for wanting to get back into dairy. I am currently renting a barn 8 miles away for my milking herd while I construct a new barn. The agreement I have with the landlord is I am responsible for all maintenance and upkeep of the milking and cooling equipment and he is charging me a daily fee plus electric costs. We are hauling the TMR from here and i have a skidsteer at the other farm to push up feed. It works out to about $2.00 per cow per day, this is for a double 8 parallel, milk tank and hydraulic alley scrapers in the barn. I have spent a few thousand keeping everything going on repairs (sat unused for 9 years) but I think it is a fair deal for both of us. Hopefully I will be in my new setup late next month, we've been renting since May and frankly I'm sick of commuting to see my girls. |
