Folks around here say if it'll grow good cotton, it should grow good alfalfa. We have had as much as 400 acres at one time, it just doesn't persist, especially when you need drainage.

Standard method is to till and prepare seedbed, maybe get a rain on it (yeah............right............) or pack it so you just leave a visible footprint in it and then drill it. Haven't had much luck doing anything short of the full prep around here in this heavy black belt clay. Been a while since we bought any alfalfa, we have been planting red clover for the last 10-15 years instead of alfalfa.

Watch out for crickets this fall. Little buggers will clip off the tiny alafalfa plants, especially around the edges of the field where they have cover.
