The cylinder helps to raise the scraper for dumping clearance, although I'd say those have plenty already! Also can allow you to change the angle of the blade, to give you some control over just dragging on ground to smooth and pack, or tilt the blade back to allow it to cut more. The angle of the cutting edge makes a huge difference in what you can do with a scraper.

Those are nice looking units garvo. Very well built. One thing I've found out is a curved back to the box helps the dirt roll better, and unload easier if wet. Curved, as in just about the curve of an old 10,000 gal heavy wall fuel tank... hint, hint. I'd image in a big tank there would be 10 scrapers or so.
