I think it is really the opposite and the protein could be causing it. I had a calf do that this year for the first time. She had been eating out of a creep feeder and after I weaned and went to feed she did it about two weeks later. I put her in a pen and cut the feed back and found that after I pretty much had her on hay and a tub you would rarely see it out and if you did not very far. I slowly started back with the feed and she got bad again so I took her and had her processed. She was out of a bull I did not have good luck with either and think it is genetics also.
