Unless you have a very strange situation that precludes perimeter tiling or better grading, I wouldn't even consider this. Sometimes in town we have to do something on the inside because the neighboring houses make it impossible to do perimeter tile and regrading, but never in the country.
For a farmer, you can smooth out and reseed easy enough, and keeping the water away reduces the pressure off the foundation way more than an interior fix-- the water will still be against the foundation and eventually cause more trouble. I wouldn't let your wife's concerns about the exterior disruption be a consideration at all-- I'd do what's right and most likely cheaper to boot.
