NW Washington | Garter snakes hibernate over winter, often in big nests under ground or in caves where they are protected from freezing temperatures.
I'll bet the ones you are seeing are just waking up from a long nap and are probably hungry and thinking about starting a new family.
They really are a beneficial creatures that eats things like bugs and slugs.
But, I know, my wife hates them too. I try to help them out when I can and keep her from seeing them.
Last year while mowing some tall grass I uncovered a small garter snake and almost immediately a crow flew down and picked it up and flew away. That sure surprised me.
