NW Minnesota | I agree with using the EPDs. There are too many external variables for actual performanc records. The EPDs are cattle association based. If you come up with an extremely heavy calviong cow, get rid of her. She most always will. GET THE PELVIC MEASUREMENTS OF YOU COWS!!! That's not a bull thing. Get rid of the small pelvic cows. I've never heard of this percentage of cow body weight for bw of calf. Sounds like crap to me. You can't always blame the bull. You have to do some work, straighten out your cow herd to accomplish what you are looking for. Keep your heiffers, get rid of older cows cause if you are doing your job, the young ones will be closer to where you want to be. Buy your bulls from a REPUTABLE breeder. Don't buy from the guy up the road who for some reason had a 60# calf wean off at 900# for no reason at all except he's a freak. Thats a crapshoot. Go for optimum, not necessarily maximum. | |
