Subject: Re: Silage innoculants and dairy

Manitoba
We have not always used it but the last few years have done so and noticed one very distinct difference. Spoilage after feedout in hot weather was hugely better. Without it the weighbacks could often be very hot. The last 3 years we have not seen that at all and the only difference was the innoculation. So I am assuming that the stability of the silage (regarding heating of the face and after feedout) has been positively impacted. No other changes in our practices other than that. Can`t recall the innoculant number but it is from pioneer. 2 years ago we used the innoculant that is supposed to increase digestability but went away from that last year to the cheaper version. This is for the corn silage. We also use another version for the haylage but have never had heating problems on the faces of that.

One thing we do is run at 75% of the suggested rate. We figure if we do a good job of packing that should be sufficient and it seems to be working. Like anything else we assume if the company comes up with a suggested rate they are playing with a significant safety margin before they are willing to say that it works at that level. We might be wrong on that but it is the approach we are using.
