| Hi, We don't have a lot of experience with breeding black. We recently purchased a herd of black SM/AN cows and have bred them to Gelbvieh bulls. Our Gelbvieh cows have been bred to black SM/AN bulls. Many of the calves are black, but you can see a reddish tinge in their hair and some are more charcoal than black. Will these calves get blacker as they get older? We have only had one that I would consider to be a smokey - he is definately grey, Our plan was to do the same this year, but we are a little nervous about whether or not the calves will get blacker or not. | |
