Hard Times, Ontario
Had 2 polio cases in 2010. First was a 7 mth pregnant heifer. Circling, acting "drunk-like". Gave her twice the lable of thiamine injections half IM and the other half IV the first day, followed by reg. rate thiamine IM for qabout 2 weeks. 100% recovery. No reason for the attack, feed hadn't been altered for 2 mths. Second case was a 650 wt steer turned out to pasture. Day 3 the pasture manager called and reported a down steer. Steer was brought to treatment area in a loader bucket. His neck was turned completely around to his left shoulder and his eyes were "buggy" and rolling around in the sockets. Steer was unable to stand but would eat and drink. Same treatment as previous heifer. Took 2 1/2 weeks but resulted in a full recovery. Closest thing to a reserection that I've ever seen! In the steer's case the polio was cased by a dramatic change in feed. Should have provided some dry hay to the cattle when switching from a haylage/corn silage backgrounding ration to a lush spring pasture.
