I think you are right about the coyote killing then the dog eating. I have had a LGD and when researching them I found where certain breeds do that. They will eat afterbirth or anything that might give the predators a scent that newborns are around. I had my dog eat both dead lambs and afterbirth. If he thought I wasn't cleaning up soon enough then he would eat it. He was a Maremma. Yes, he did bark almost all night. That is their genetics. It's there way of telling the predators that they are there and willing to protect the animals. However, if not properly trained they could be a BIg problem like chewing ears of does.
