John, we just use the curb without putting the rod attached to valve. Found it's better to just make a longer handled wrench to turn valves on. Those cotter keys just rot or break off. As for the electrolysis your right it sure eats pipes up. A lot depends on your soil and water as to how bad it eats pipes up. I've seen some brass/ galv. that never gets electrolysis.
