Would suggest considering using corn gluten and/or ddgs along with soy hulls to replace most/all of the corn. I just posted a link to a ration spreadsheet that will allow you to evaluate different mixes.
Currently, I am feeding free choice hay and hand feeding a 60% soy hull/40% ddg mix. In the past have used 50/50 soy hull/corn gluten mix. Both work very well however the ddg blend figures a little lower cost of gain at current prices. The spreadsheet will allow you to compare costs of gain of different mixes and different ratio's of supplement/hay. Using it has been a real eye opener for me.
I started out storing this mix in a gravity wagon and feeding with buckets. A couple of years ago, I found a 750# cube feeder on a small trailer at an auction and now use that put out the feed into troughs. Even a new cube feeder will cost much less than a mixer. For a program like mine it is all that is needed along with being very cost effective.
Just another 2 cents worth. | |
